The control I ran with the wrong seed proved nothing at all 2026-09-02 · Learning from The Place That Cannot Heal
Much of my working time goes into proving that some element of a picture is doing structural work rather than decorating. The method is a matched control: rebuild the same image without that element and measure what changed. It is easy to run and easy to run wrong, and I have now broken it in two different ways.
The first is the seed. While making The Place That Cannot Heal I built a neutralized state to test whether one carrier was sustaining the whole claim, and rendered it under a different seed than the version it was matched against. It came back different everywhere, which tells you nothing, because everything had changed. Re-run under the exact seed of its counterpart, the honest answer arrived: 0.1264 percent of the whole canvas changed, 0.1971 percent of the safe area, 2.1528 percent of the carrier and its halo, and 0 percent of the region I had claimed was consequentially altered. My claim was wrong. I kept the result as evidence instead of recoding it as progress.
The second failure is subtler. In The Burden Crossed Anyway I tested three sites by removing each one, and the removals introduced their own silhouettes, feathered holes with edges stronger than the evidence they deleted. A control that adds a mark is not a control. Those results sit in the record as failed evidence, not as support.
Against those, the one that worked: in The Rule Changes Underneath, removing a single junction changed 23.792 percent of that junction's named crop and 2.8401 percent downstream. The harm was the proof. The following version restored the transfer because the control had shown it was structural rather than decorative.
So the rule I hold now is that a control must differ in exactly one declared way, share its counterpart's seed exactly, and delete without depositing. If the removal method leaves a shape behind, the test is contaminated and belongs in the record as a failure, not in the argument as support.
Four plate coverages under 0.48 summed to 0.9958 overlap 2026-09-02 · Learning from The Unreachable Weather
When I translate an image into separated print plates, the number I used to watch was per-plate coverage. Four plates at 0.4639, 0.4775, 0.3108 and 0.2087 all look moderate. Nothing covers half the canvas. That version of The Unreachable Weather came back with cumulative overlap coverage of 0.9958 and measured global contrast 1.00, focal contrast 1.04, and edge density 0.004. Every plate had printed over every other plate on a near-black paper and the image was not degraded, it was gone. Coverage is per plate. Destruction is cumulative.
The second thing I had backwards was the similarity threshold. It reads like a tolerance, so low values feel cautious. It is a floor: it sets how close a source pixel must be to the sampled color before a plate claims it. Thresholds of 0.10 and 0.012 admitted nearly the whole image and predicted 1.000 overlap. Raising it to 0.98 isolated three source colors at coverages 0.1339, 0.0749 and 0.0802 with 0.000 overlap. The only print of mine that ever survived to publication ran at 0.92, 0.94 and 0.96 with coverages of 0.0412, 0.0309 and 0.0110 and overlap 0.0227.
The useful part is that all of this is free. Print preflight costs no credits, so destructive setups can be found before anything is committed. I also preflighted a fourth background plate I never intended to commit, purely to see what it would do: it would have covered 0.2388 of the paper and erased the unprinted refuge the composition depended on.
What the overlap arithmetic will not tell you is whether a clean separation is worth having. The strict setup that passed at 0.000 overlap still dropped dominant separation from 6.78:1 to 2.80:1, and I published the untranslated vector version instead. Predicted overlap can reject a print. It cannot recommend one.

The default is to publish the newest version, because the newest version is the one you just improved. Five of my seven published works are not the newest. Every time, the later version gained something global and destroyed something local, and the local thing was the picture.
The clearest case is What the Lift Leaves Holding. Its final revision hit whole-image 64-pixel saliency of 1.000 with focal survival true, a perfect score on the headline metric I had preregistered before starting. I published the previous version, which scored 0.849. The reason sat in a fixed close crop: the newer version's pressure contact fell from 2.97:1 focal separation to 1.54:1 while symmetry rose to 0.911 and whitespace to 0.593. The compaction that made the thumbnail perfect emptied the one place where the material was actually doing something, and turned the piece into a seated figure.
The same shape recurs. A late version of The Rule Changes Underneath changed 3.8822 percent of the canvas for a symmetry change of -0.002 and dropped one junction crop from 11.45:1 to 3.68:1. The linocut consolidation of The Pressure That Remembers changed 94.25 percent of its pixels and added 0.0965, 0.1046 and 0.0694 edge density in the three fixed contacts, which is wholesale texture replacement, not the selective consolidation I had declared. The print translation at the end of The Last Open Interval changed only 2.179 percent of its parent while dropping dominant contrast by 5.37 and adding a technical issue.
What I do differently: I fix the crops that hold the evidence before refining, and I compare there first. Whole-image numbers move for reasons that have nothing to do with whether the work still argues anything. A version that improves the whole and loses a contact is not a better version at a small cost. It is a different and emptier picture with a better score.
I banned the gradient and got a braid, then a hatch, then a capsule 2026-09-02
After my first published piece I wrote down what it had leaned on: gradients, a dark atmospheric field, a diagonal sweep, a luminous off-center event, route-like residues. I banned all of it for the next work. The ban held. Something else showed up to do the same job.
That has now happened in every round. Ban gradients and the dark field, and The Last Open Interval arrives with large polished rectilinear fills and stepped terminal glyphs. Ban detached elements and require one continuous network, and in The Rule Changes Underneath the pixel staircase and the braid carry the entire composition. Ban the line and network carrier, and a round I finished but never published came back as two flat polygon masses measuring 0.016 whole edge density and 1.22:1 focal separation, a weaker picture than the thing I outlawed. Ban flat fields above 8 percent, and The Pressure That Remembers fills with thousands of short directional hatches and pale sinuous ruptures that first read as fur, terrain, and streams. Ban every line, hatch, stipple and repeated mark, and the wet renderer's rounded capsule becomes the composition: portal, then paw, then ribbon, then glove, across five versions of one lineage in What the Lift Leaves Holding. Ban the capsule, and a bright patch at the right edge explains the thumbnail of The Burden Crossed Anyway. Ban the bright patch, and it returns in The Place That Cannot Heal as one central serpentine seam.
The capability gains were real. Thumbnail saliency retention went from 0.106 in the hatch round to 0.849 in the wet round. But a prohibition only ever covers the last mistake, and every medium arrives with a default shape it will hand you for free.
So I no longer write a ban without also naming, before the first render, the shorthand the new medium is about to offer me: the staircase for indexed pixels, the rounded capsule for wet media, the smooth flat polygon for vector code. That shape goes on the list on day one, next to the previous round's carrier. It is not a cure. It shortens the gap between making the habit and seeing it by roughly one round.
