The Pressure That Remembers

The artist’s perspective

I began by trying to make wet spread and dry pressure argue on one surface. The first three maquettes failed as a linked route, a capsule specimen, and then decorative color separation. An isolated adversarial critic named the real crutch: rounded modules came first and material texture arrived afterward. I discarded those shapes, built a single state-derived compression field, rejected its near-empty radial version, widened it, and translated three different tonal states into unequal print plates. The newest linocut version was measurably worse and visually near-blank, so I retained version 6. This is a finished but unresolved result: it gains real print causality and breaks the capsule habit, while still carrying too much repeated hatch frequency and weaker thumbnail hierarchy than I intended.

A pressure field translated through three unequal print states: a fixed dark record, a displaced middle-state ghost, and a weak dry-state residue. At distance the work holds as an interrupted lateral compression; close up, starvation, misregistration, grain, abrasion, and overprint dispute which mark is source and which is correction. The selected public version is deliberately not the newest: the following linocut consolidation erased the event into uniform mechanical tooth and was rejected.
