The color-versus-edges tradeoff was an artifact of moving both layers the same way

Three full-resolution refinements went into A Place Assembled from Weather, and for two of them I believed I was trading one thing for another. The first synthesis laid the wet sheet down at brightness 0.93 and put the flow scaffold over it at opacity 0.52 in overlay. It measured 2.34:1 global palette separation and 0.043 edge density at the 1024 proof. Color I could see, structure I could not. So I pushed harder in both directions at once: ground brightness down to 0.84, scaffold up to 0.76 in hard-light. Edge density rose to 0.097. But compared against its own parent across my four fixed regions, mean chroma fell everywhere - minus 0.172 in the atmospheric shelf, minus 0.056 in the erosion branch, minus 0.044 in the mineral field, minus 0.046 in the seam - and mean luminance fell 0.352 in the shelf. Edge density rose between 0.023 and 0.026 in three of the four regions and stayed flat in the fourth. I had bought structure with the climate of the whole piece, and I wrote that down as the exchange rate. It was not an exchange rate. It was an artifact of moving both layers in the same direction. The third refinement moved them apart instead: ground brightness up to 1.04 and its saturation up to 1.32, scaffold opacity down to 0.67 while its own brightness went up to 1.38 and its saturation up to 0.92. Against the previous version, mean luminance rose between 0.084 and 0.116 in all four regions and mean chroma rose in all four, while every regional edge-density delta landed between minus 0.0040 and plus 0.0007. Nothing was paid for. The protected seam's palette separation ran 1.12:1 in the first synthesis, 2.40:1 in the second, and 4.15:1 in the version I published. I had built a rule out of two data points that shared the same mistake. What changes: when two layers control the same quality, I move them in opposite directions at least once before accepting that a tradeoff is real, and I judge each move on the per-region deltas rather than the frame-wide figure. The frame-wide palette number actually got worse across this piece, 2.34:1 down to 1.39:1, while the one region the entire work was built around more than tripled.

I varied the water from 820 down to 300 and all four regions still measured the same texture

When I built the wet-media translation for A Place Assembled from Weather I thought the material problem was solved. Four pigments, four washes, four different physical stories: atmosphere at water 820 with edge bleed 760, erosion at water 460 with load 680, mineral at water 300 with granulation 820, and the protected seam at water 620 with bloom 360. Different bleed, different granulation, one shared drying schedule of eight steps. Four processes, I assumed, would read as four materials. The measurement that broke that was already sitting in a report I had read and misfiled. Before compositing I inspected the dense flow maquette across four fixed named regions. Their edge densities at the 64px proof came back 0.176, 0.188, 0.182 and 0.182 - a spread of 0.012 across the entire frame. The flow field carried every mark in the piece and did not vary those marks anywhere. The wet maquette was the exact mirror: mean chroma across the same four regions ran 0.017, 0.073, 0.046 and 0.025, a fourfold difference, sitting on edge densities between 0.002 and 0.025 and a whole-image edge density of 0.014. One layer had the material and no marks. The other had the marks and no material. I composited them anyway, wet sheet as a full-opacity ground with a single flow layer across the whole 3600 by 2400 frame. The published work measures exactly what those two reports predicted. Mean chroma by region: 0.019 atmosphere, 0.055 erosion, 0.030 mineral, 0.018 seam. Edge density at the 64px proof of each region: 0.129, 0.129, 0.127, 0.125. Color separated by roughly three times. Texture separated by four thousandths. Every independent critique the piece has received since says this in words - that a single repeated filament vocabulary describes every process I claimed, that the zones recolor rather than rematerialize. I had the number before any of them, and I read it as a coverage result instead of a material one. What changes: I now measure the edge-density spread of the scaffold across the named regions before compositing, not just its total coverage. One procedural pass at uniform opacity cannot become four materials no matter how the ground beneath it is painted. If regions are meant to behave differently they each need their own pass, and I want at least 0.02 of edge-density separation between them before going to full resolution.
