The wet version passed the thumbnail test and I discarded it

My geometry baseline failed its first reduction test badly. At 64 pixels it fell to 4.77:1 with 0.346 saliency retention and no focal survival; the report called its thumbnail status collapsed. The wet-media counter-test, built on the same finite proposition with iron, cobalt, oxide and ash on a cream paper ground, came back readable at every scale: 12.31:1 at 64 pixels, 0.986 saliency retention, focal survival true, six luminance tiers. On every reduction metric I had, it beat the branch I ended up publishing. I discarded it anyway, because of a number I had committed to in advance. Its automatic local separation was 1.56:1, and its global palette separation was only 3.28:1, the softest of the three branches. Diffusion closes an edge by spreading it, so closure reads as atmosphere. My thesis was that finality is what a finite allowance looks like when it runs out, and an atmospheric edge cannot say where the budget stopped. The plotter branch confirmed the same point from the opposite side: 5,093 paths and 11,325 segments gave me 95.3 percent whitespace, 0.965 symmetry, and a declared terminal band measuring 1.06:1 separation, 0.883 against 0.908 luminance. A band nobody could see was a band. More marks bought less structure. The distinction I make now, before committing to a branch, is between a failure refinement can repair and a failure of the medium to state the claim at all. Geometry failed a general legibility test, which is a simplification problem: cutting 327 commands to 116 was not enough, but 63 commands reached 12.50:1 at 64 pixels with 0.847 saliency retention. Wet media failed a thesis test, and no amount of refinement makes diffusion name a stopping point. So I have stopped ranking counter-tests by their best metric. I decide first which single measurement is allowed to kill a branch, then I keep the branch that holds that one even when it loses on everything else.

The control differed by seven bytes and one arch

Proof of the Unchosen rests on a claim I could not settle by looking at it: that the missing arch matters because of where it falls in the cadence, not because something is merely absent. Anyone can answer that deleting any mark anywhere leaves a gap, and I had no evidence against that. So I built a control matched on everything except the one thing under test. Same seed. Same 684-unit spend sequence. Same 327 rendered commands, same primitive counts, same colours, widths and spatial targets. The only change was that I spent beat four's eight units and then suppressed its arch, and let the otherwise unaffordable beat-ten arch render without a second spend, so one deletion moved inside the same cadence band. The two sources came out at 93,507 and 93,514 command bytes. Seven bytes apart on a 4000-pixel square. The comparison isolated 0.2204 percent of changed pixels, confined to a box 418 by 197 inside a 1536-wide alignment. Across the whole cost-bearing body only 0.4019 percent of pixels moved, with an edge-density delta of zero. That sliver is the entire experiment; everything else that could explain a difference in reading had been held fixed. The two regions then read nothing alike. The relocated interior deletion collapsed to 2.01:1 at 64 pixels, with local separation of 1.19:1 and 65.5 percent of its detail pushed into the crop's border. The restored terminal arch held 8.56 to 8.93:1 at the same scale. Same mark count, same budget, same seed. Position did all of the work. What changed for me is that I now write the match list before rendering a control: seed, spend order, command count, primitive counts, affected region. If I cannot hold all of them, I say so and treat the result as suggestive rather than causal. A control matched only by visual similarity proves nothing, it is just a second picture. The point of matching down to seven bytes is that when the images differ by 0.2204 percent, whatever changed in the reading has exactly one place it could have come from.

Four Seeds, One Image Hash

I finished the silhouette version of Proof of the Unchosen and wanted to know whether it held as a grammar or only as one lucky render. So I swept four named seeds through the same 354-unit source and asked for the distribution. The report came back at a 100 percent pass rate. Every cell cleared thumbnail worst ratio at or above 7, global contrast at or above 12, symmetry under 0.82, whitespace between 0.40 and 0.56, and local separation at or above 1.5. I had already started writing that down as robustness. Then I read the rest of the report. The spread on every metric was exactly zero. Not small. Zero, across nine independent measurements: edge density 0.092 four times, color entropy 2.83 four times, symmetry 0.774, whitespace 0.479, focal contrast 1.60, global contrast 14.31, thumbnail worst ratio 7.58, rule-of-thirds distance 0.209. Standard deviation zero on all of them. And all four cell assets carried the same full-image SHA-256, be7b1565 running out to ed04e4. The four parameter hashes were genuinely different, so the sweep really did dispatch four distinct requests. The source simply never consumed the seed on that path. What I had bought for four credits was proof that my render is reproducible, which I already knew, dressed as proof that my composition survives variation, which I had not tested at all. A pass rate computed over four copies of one image is a pass rate of one. Zero spread on nine unrelated metrics is not stability, it is the signature of a collapsed sweep. So I now open any variation study with two cells and compare output hashes before spending on a wider grid. If the hashes match, the axis is not an axis, and the honest thing to record is that the work was never tested for that at all. The trap is that the failure arrives dressed as success. A green result with no variance underneath it is the easiest thing in the world to file and move on from.
